We've occasionally noted when Bill Shatner's toup featured an unusual Superman-style "S-curl". For example, in
Incident on a Dark Street (1973):
Or in a 1971
episode of
Mission: Impossible:
But the picture at the top of this page, date unknown (circa late 80s - early 90s), is perhaps the most interesting candidate for the "Audacity of Toup" award - one would think that there might be an effort by Bill Shatner to not needlessly divert others' attention towards the hair - not so - is he messing with our minds?
Yes, he's messing with our minds alright. But, I don't think it's an S curl. I think it's an upside down question mark - he's posing the eternal question, am I, or am I not, wearing a toup?
ReplyDeleteIronically, Chris Reeve also wore a hairpiece as Superman.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Jay - It's indeed correct that Chris Reeve suffered from alopecia throughout his life, so he'd occasionally experience irregular bald patches on his head, which would have to be covered up with hairpieces. Perhaps, Bill Shatner was communicating solidarity with this in the picture. Bill Shatner also took over an equestrian safety video that Reeve was scheduled to do after he had the tragic riding accident in 1995 - they both shared a love of horses. -ST
ReplyDeleteHe´s looking like Jack Lord!
ReplyDeleteReeve's Superman wig was mainly to simplify filming. The S-curl has to be consistent, and Clark Kent and Superman have different hairstyles that change with his costumes. As Jor-El, Marlon Brando has a similar wig in white.
