The toup minders.

A great toupological moment from Star Trek's third season episode "The Cloud Minders". These kinds of first-hand experiments are quite rare, and so the scientists at the William Shatner School of Toupological Studies and in particular those with the "Department of External Inter-Toupular Activity" are highly excited by the potential for knowledge that this clip could yield.

Does the mask clip the toup (which, at the front, crept round the sides a little in order to have a stronger hold) or Bill Shatner's real hair? Was Bill Shatner angered by this non-approved toupular interaction? There are all sorts of questions that must be answered!

  1. non-toup related: Is there a first-draft script of this episode available anywhere? It was originally done by David Gerrold and from how it was described, probably would have made one of the best episodes of Star Trek. It was heavily revised by other writers and later turned into typical 3rd season Star Dreck.

  2. You know what's funny - I just watched that episode over the weekend, and noticed that mask affair. I wondered they talked Shatner into that. I suppose at that point there wasn't much care, given how close they were to the end of the series.

I'm not certain it was a bad episode - it could've been better. I've read about Gerrold's original story, but am not convinced it could've been translated into a single-hour episode.

  6. You can see the utter fear in his face as the toup hangs on for dear life, and the overwhelming relief as it manages to stay on. What a moment.
