Our latest poll guaged your views on a question that many of you will likely have asked yourselves during your visits to Shatner's Toupee: How would Bill Shatner feel if he knew about the work of the William Shatner School of Toupological Studies? 31% of you, the largest share of the vote, believed that he would simply say "But I don't wear a toupee!". A very close second was "Get a life!"...
William Shatner's famous "Get a Life!" skit on SNL, which parodied obsessive Trekkies.
We received a surprisingly large number (thanks everyone!) of ideas and picking a winner was no easy task. Had we been allowed to compete, we would have jokingly referenced ST:IV with "Well, double-dumb-toup on you!!". But without further adieu, in joint second place are "Ratty Lost Years Piece" with "If I find out that you used my glue, there's going to be Hell toupee!" and "Infmom" with "Oh, dude, I love your hair. Where did you buy it?"21% thought he'd be flattered by the attention, 8% thought he'd need to be convinced of the importance to humanity of the work and 3% thought he'd secretly be relived the facts were coming out. Only 7% of you thought he'd be angered and hurt by the revelations.
On that last point - that's something we sincerely and honestly hope would not be the case. We don't have a litmus test for our thousands of staff, but generally we find that they are very fond of and rather fascinated by Bill Shatner, in spite of - or perhaps because of - his many human flaws. Besides, there's really nothing secret (even back in '57 and back in '65 the news was out) about Bill Shatner's toupee-wearing, which has permeated popular culture almost as much as the man himself.
So, our take is that we might as well try to get the facts straight and in so doing better understand Bill Shatner the man (can William Shatner the man really be fully understood without understanding the toupee?) - and if we help further the cause of humanity along the way, why not?
Now to the results of our recent caption contest...
If only this were a still from the next Star Trek movie - an older Kirk, in some alternative Trek fantasy world aboard his 1960s-style starship...

And our winner is...drum roll..."adidas" with "The hair. I just envy the hair. Is it a dominant gene?" amusingly referencing Bill Shatner's query to George Lucas during a 2005 tribute skit to the Star Wars director - more here. Thanks again to all of you! A special "prize" for our winner "is" "on its way"!
B*gger! Missed yet another poll. I must get a life! Should visit more often.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure that Shatner is/would be flattered (deep down) by this site but he'd protest otherwise eh? Love the caption.
I'm thinking Shatner already knows about this site. If not, well, I'm his Facebook friend; I should probably tell him. Except then he'd defriend me.
