The amazing lace: you can comb it back!

Reader "ACELP" points to an interesting 1966 picture of Bill Shatner visiting the Worldcon convention (above), which underlines one of the key features of the lace frontal hairpiece - that the hair could be combed backwards. This is something that Bill Shatner evidently tried on more than one occasion, but without the attention of on-set hairstylists, the careful illusion of the toup could occasionally be undermined - just a little, as is evident in the above picture.

Bill Shatner proudly demonstrates one of the lace toupee's top features.

  1. That was what threw me for a minute. It was so sloppily combed in that 1966 pic that it almost didn't look like one of his standard rugs. Shat was so high maintenance!

  2. It must be uncofortable to be out in the streets with a lace toupee. Just imagine if the glue starts to melt...
In the second pic Bill is looking like Sean Connery, another 60´s notorious toup friend

  3. That really is the Holy Grail shot, the true Shatner scalp exposed, even if only a little. Oh for more images of this.

  7. Paulo, you're right about The Shat's tonsorial similarity to Sean Connery in the 1960s. I recommend everyone try to see Goldfinger on Blu-ray, specifically the shot where he wakes up to find Pussy Galore standing in front of him (follows on from the famous scene with the laser). Connery is wearing a very similar rug with similar tell-tale problems.

  8. There may have been an ulterior motive to Shatner wanting Connery to appear in Star Trek V. Shatner was so ultra-competitive that he'd want to be the master of all Toupeed actors and second to no one. If casting had gone according to plan and the film was successful, Bill's next victim in Star Trek VI might have been Burt Reynolds. All of this follows after Shat had dispatched the wigged-out Khan in Star Trek II.

  9. To be fair to Shats, that space between his (alleged) rug and his real hair could just as easily be exposed by thinning hair. If your hair is thin and you comb it over to one side, the score will appear bigger if your hair is thinner.
