Joan Collins update.
A while back, we asked our valued readers for help in tracking down an interview with Joan Collins in which she mentioned Bill Shatner's toupee. In the interview, the actress recalled working on the Star Trek episode "The City on the Edge of Forever" and remembered being surprised that Bill Shatner, compared to Captain Kirk, was shorter, rounder and balder.
A number of you have since responded that the interview in question was with Australian satirist Clive James. A little deduction leads us to this episode of Sunday Night Clive, which aired on 27th March 1994. Tracking down the footage will depend on someone having a videotape recording of the episode in question - not an easy task; perhaps Joan Collins fans hold the key. Thanks to our readers for assisting us in this toupological detective work. The search continues...

I remember the interview. Collins was embellishing and exaggerating for effect, as she often does when telling anecdotes. I'd take it all in that sense, with a pinch of salt (or paunch). Incidentally, in another Clive James interview, The Shat was asked to give a Vulcan 'live long and prosper' sign with his fingers, so he did so but uttered a yiddish obscenity instead of a Vulcan phrase.
ReplyDeleteSome months ago I emailed Clive James about this, but no reply
ReplyDeleteToupee or not Toupee, that is the question.
ReplyDeleteCollins tells that she did a scene with Shatner as Kirk and saying he was tall, tan, with a head full of hair. The next day in make-up, as he noticed a man in the next chair who was short, pale, and balding. She asked the makeup man who it was and he said it was Shatner.
